Orientation & Placement Testing

Once you are admitted to UMBC, you will receive instructions regarding how to register for orientation as well as how to register for math, reading, and writing online placement tests. If you plan to participate in the summer bridge program, it is REQUIRED that you attend orientation during the month of June prior to the start of the program in early July. To learn more about registering for orientation, please visit the Undergraduate Orientation website. Students considering the summer bridge program should try to attend orientation on June 19th, 21st, or 22nd, 2017. If these dates are not available, please contact us as we may be able to register you for one of these dates.

It is also imperative that you complete the online placement tests. We recommend that you prepare for these tests and take them seriously as the results will be used to place you in the appropriate Math and English courses. You MUST complete the placement tests prior to attending orientation and prior to the start of the program as these tests will determine if students place into MATH104, MATH106, MATH 150 or ENGL100 which are offered as part of the program. These tests will also help you make the best choices in planning your schedule, not only for summer bridge, but for the fall semester. You will register for fall courses when you attend Orientation, which as stated earlier, must take place during the month of June. Full details on placement testing and sample tests are provided on the Learning Resources Center website. If you need special testing accommodations because of a disability, please contact Student Disability Services at 410-455-2459 or email at disAbility@umbc.edu as soon as possible.

Housing

Students participating in the summer bridge program have the option to live on campus or commute for the six week duration of the program. If at all possible, we recommend that students live on campus to take full advantage of the summer bridge program opportunities, especially those students who intend to pursue both the Math AND Writing tracks during the summer. Students pursuing one track (Math OR English) will need to be on campus two to three days a week and students pursuing two tracks (Math AND English) will need to be on campus four to five days a week.

On campus housing will be provided in suite style residence halls and students will live with other summer bridge program participants. Students will also live with summer bridge staff and Residential Life staff. These staff members will be available for assistance if/when needed and will also provide additional opportunities for activities, study hall, and programs for students participating in the program.

Students who think they may want on-campus housing during summer bridge should indicate this on their application to the program. Additional information will be sent to students who want housing once they have been accepted into the summer bridge program.

Please note: there are additional costs and fees associated with living on campus, including the cost for housing plus meals.

Disability Services

Student Support Services (SSS) provides services for students with disabilities at UMBC. In order to receive accommodation services, students are encouraged to register with SSS as soon as possible. Students registered with SSS may qualify for additional tutoring, academic, and counseling services. In order to register with SSS, please contact them at (410) 455-2459 as soon as possible.

Please make sure to mention that you will be registering with Student Support Services in your CSI application. This information will be kept confidential and only accessed by the Program Coordinator.
