Overview
  • Fall and spring semester courses last approximately 15 weeks; courses in the Summer Bridge Program cover the same amount of material in only 6 weeks. The coursework during Summer Bridge is designed to be challenging and fast-paced. However, the faculty and staff that teach these courses are very aware that the students may be experiencing their first college-level course and are willing to work with all students to keep them up to speed.
  • All courses offered as part of the program will fulfill a UMBC requirement and carry at least 3 credits.
  • All students participating can take either MATH104 (Quantitative Reasoning), MATH106 (Algebra and Elementary Functions) OR MATH150 (Pre-Calculus) AND/OR ENGL100 (Composition).   • Every student participating in the program will participate in an Introduction to an Honors University (IHU) course to learn about the resources and requirements of attending an Honors University. This course will be attached to MATH or ENGL depending on the student’s schedule and will add one additional credit, making one of these courses worth 4 or 5 credits.
  • All courses offered are limited to 25-40 students, ensuring that each student will have a friendly, supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions, exploring ideas, and challenging perceptions of college life and coursework. Best of all – each student will receive one-on-one time with the professors who are carefully chosen because of their abilities to work with new students.

MATH104:
Quantitative Literacy

This course focuses on algebraic and numeric skills in the context of applications and problem-solving. Students that enroll in this course will be prepared to move on to STAT121 (Statistics) or MATH120 (Contemporary Math). This course is especially recommended for those students who do not intend to pursue a STEM major but need to brush up on math skills or those who have not had a mathematics course in several years. Topics include: quantitative relationships, algebraic reasoning, functional reasoning, probabilistic and statistical reasoning, and the course incorporates communication skills and technology.

MATH106: Algebra and Elementary Functions

This course is an introduction to the basic techniques and functions of mathematics. This course is especially recommended for those students who need to brush up due to shaky high school preparation or for those who have not had a mathematics course in several years. Topics include linear equations; quadratic equations; polynomials; and rational functions and their inverses, including exponential and the logarithmic functions.

MATH150: Pre-Calculus

This course provides the math prep needed for calculus. Also provides prep for Physics, Comp Sci, and Engineering courses. Topics include review of functions, graphing techniques, logarithmic and exponential functions, basic right angle trigonometry, followed by extensive treatment of trigonometrics functions, identities, and applications to analytic geometry of the conic sections, apps for 2-D vectors and to the geometry of complex numbers.

ENGL100: Composition

This course will consist of a workshop in writing. Students will learn about the writing process, how to write clear and effective essays, and how to think critically and support ideas. The course will consist of writing essays, analyzing novels, conducting research using both print and electronic sources and providing review to peers. Ultimately students should walk away from this course being able to write in a clear and effective manner.

Deb Webb (MATH104)

Professor Deb Webb is the Coordinator of the SI/PASS program for the Learning Resources Center (LRC). Deb received an Associates of Science in Industrial and Digital Electronics from CCBC, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Information Systems and a Masters of Education in Instructional Technology from UMUC. Raja Baradwaj (MATH150)

Professor Baradwaj is a Senior Lecturer of Statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Raji received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Mathematics from University of Madras, India in the years 1984 and 1986 respectively. Read more

Brian Dunnigan (ENGL100)

Professor Dunnigan is a Lecturer in the English Department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Brian received his BA in English from UMBC (graduated Magna Cum Laude) and his MA in Literature from American University in Washington, D.C. In addition to attending UMBC, he has worked at UMBC since the Fall of 2003. Read more

Sam Riley (MATH106)

Professor Sam Riley is the Coordinator of Mathematics, Statistics, and Tutoring for the Learning Resources Center (LRC). Sam received a BA in Ancient Studies and Math along with a Certificate in Women’s Studies and a MA in Instructional Systems Development from UMBC. In addition to attending UMBC, Sam has worked at UMBC for over 17 years. Read more
