Outcast United:

An American Town, a Refugee Team, and One Woman’s Quest to Make a Difference

by Warren St. John

The Committee recommends this book because: Outcasts United speaks to the difficulties of bringing together people from different cultures and backgrounds. It supports the value of both education and recreational sports. The story shows how determined individuals can make a difference in their own lives and that of others. By showing the struggles of family facing so much adversity, the book can put into perspective the dislocation and academic struggles experienced by new students. UMBC and the Baltimore area are both home to people from many countries, some of them refugees. The book may provide an opening for conversations among UMBC students from different countries.
